Superintendent Sam Steele of the North West Mounted Police led a life of danger and adventure in the western provinces and territories of Canada.


Dorothea Palmer

28 year old Dorothea Palmer was arrested on September 14, 1936 after leaving the home of Mrs. Mousseau, a Roman Catholic mother of five who lived in Eastview, Ottawa, Ontario. Dorothea was charged under Section 207(c) of the Criminal Code which made it a crime to sell or advertise birth control in Canada. If convicted, she faced 2 years in prison. Her trial lasted 23 days and was at the time one of the most expensive and notorious in Canadian history.


Felix d’Herelle

Felix d’Herelle was a bacteriologist at the Louis Pasteur Institute in 1917 when he discovered bacteriophage, a virus that eats bacteria.


Pierre de Sales Laterriere

Pierre de Sales Laterrière arrived in Quebec in 1766.

He claimed to have medical training and be of noble birth but Ægidius Fauteux doubts his credentials.

Regardless, Laterrière hobnobbed with the elite, married, and became wealthy and his sons went on to be political figures of repute.
