We have questions. Can you help?
In doing research we have concentrated on what we need to know
to build the models but this has left many questions unanswered.
To make the models more accuracte and to provide articles that explain
the past, we are asking for your help.
First Nations
- How we name people is important. Sioux means "enemy",
Eskimo means "eater of raw meat", Cheyenne means "foreigner".
The name "Huron" is of unknown origin, but it is not
what the Wendat called themselves. The missionaries often referred
to the Huron by the name of their tribe. Canadian history has
tended to refer to them as Hurons, Indians, natives or First Nations.
They are said to have called themselves the Wendat or Wyandot.
What name do
you think is most appropriate?
- Population figures for pre-Contact North America are a disputed
topic.
Do you have population figures for any area of North America,
any Nation, or for the continent? If so, what are the numbers
and what is the basis of your conclusions?
- Europeans define ownership in legalistic terms: one either has
title to property or not. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries,
the American government only negotiated land purchases with settled
natives, believing that hunter-gatherers did not "own"
the land they used. What
were some First Nations' relationship to property and to land?
- Descriptions of native architecture vary and are often biased
by the writer's perceptions. Illustrations are affected by the
artist's skills. Do
you have information to share about non-European buildings in
the Americas?
