  Schneider Haus Biographies

IImmigrants

Joseph Schneider was part of the 1806-07 migration from Lancaster County Pennsylvania. He arrived with his wife Barbara Eby and their 4 children, traveling with his brother-in-law. The Schneiders had 3 more children, included Joseph E Schneider, who inherited the house when Joseph Sr. died in 1843.

Mary Erb and her husband Jacob Schneider arrived in 1806 with Christian Schneider who was married to Elizabeth Erb. Mary and Jacob settled on the east bank of the Grand River away from the main concentration of settlers. By buying additional lots, including most of the Upper Block previously owned by James Wilson, they accumulated almost 2500 acres of land in just 12 years. A number of relatives moved into the area until it became known as Schneider's Corner (from 1860 on, Bloomingdale).

Joseph E. Schneider (Nov. 23 1810- 1880 ) married Sarah Shantz on Jan 28 1834 and moved into the Schneider house. They had 9 children survive past infancy. Around 1857, Joseph and Sarah undertook major renovations to the house, inside and out. They would have used their own lumber, but purchased hardware, paint, etc. in the town of Berlin which had a population of over 1100. Between 1853 and 1859, land values in the area rose and Joseph sold many acres. The family continued to prosper with income from farming, land sales and the sawmill.

Samuel B. Schneider inherited the house in 1880 with the death of his father. He married Rebecca Fried in 1865 andtogether they moved in. They had seven babies, 3 of whom survived infancy.
